Re-branding for Cape Breton Regional Municipality Music Festival, Makin’ Waves - in Sydney, N.S.
Makin' Waves Music Festival is an annual string of events held in Sydney, NS at the Wentworth Perk bandshell put on by the Cape Breton Regional Municipality. In 2018, it was time for a refresh of the existing logo and brand materials. It was important to take into consideration the intention of the audience attending the community music event, the presenting sponsors inclusion, and visually touching on the significance of the location. It was very exciting to work on a branding project with such a meaningful connection to where I grew up.
“Since the founding of Sydney in 1785, Wentworth Park has been an integral part of community life for the area. A wooden bandshell, constructed in the early part of the 20th century, was replaced with a concrete structure by the Kiwanis Club of Sydney in 1962. The current facade of the bandshell began in 2007 as part of a $2.3 million renovation to the park and its facilities. For many residents of Sydney, Wentworth Park has been synonymous with music and community. “
Through iteration, concepts including illustration of the bandshell, capturing the energy of the events and incorporating a retro-feel became the focus. The shape of the chosen logo and the illustration style are reminiscent of the 60's and '70s, the era when the bandshell was replaced with the existing structure. The colour was chosen to be bright, welcoming and have a hazy-warm feeling to it. The logo shape is reminiscent of an old car decal or vintage signage.
